Here we are at the last week of July, and it is sweating time. The heat index is back at 105-106, give or take
a degree, so how to cool off? Go north for a while I thought. We are back at Lake of the Ozarks with our dear friends the Levisay’s for one final summer week of vacation. I had boasted about how much cooler Missouri would be than north Texas. A little advice here, don’t ever tempt mother nature.
After a 10 hour drive, I expected to open my car door and step into relatively cooler temps in the mid 80’s. Surprise! No only is the temp in the mid to high 90’s under a bright afternoon sun, the humidity around the lake comes close to matching the temp. How do you say sweltering? The only saving grace was to get out on the lake quickly and get some air moving, because there is no breeze otherwise right now.
There is no avoiding the summer heat, no matter where you go right now in the lower 48, just go with it. Our little dog Sophie seems to be handling it well, fur coat, life jacket and all. You can tell who “thinks” she is captain of the boat.
There is hope for cooler weather tonight, however. At sunset, and they are beautiful here, clouds started gathering to
our north, and as night fell flashes of lightning started dancing across the sky. I tuned in the National Weather Service radio (we’ve got no Finfrock up here) and heard a
message from heaven in the form of a computer generated voice; “possible rain tomorrow and temperatures in the upper 70’s. You are listening to the voice of the National Weather Service.” Yea, right. It is the Lake, “don’t wish for rain” I say to myself, no matter how hot it gets! That is what jumping in the lake is for, a big splash to cool off.
Anchor weight check: I am down 11 pounds.
